David Glen's Visit Thursday

Dear Students:

Following David's presentation on Thursday, I want to urge you to respond on this blog with comments so that Dave and I can interact with you. You will find that Dave has posted a couple of photo images so that you can get a sense of the aesthetic direction he wants to move us in. You will discover that Dave's concern as a documentary photographer is to frame a cultural context and content of real lives into a rich aesthetically compelling image. One of the points that I believe we will learn from Dave's presentation on Thursday is that fine documentary photography is inevitably aesthetically potent. In fact, I would go so far so to say that the best photography is always a powerful combination of form, theme, and context, and this is true for all of the arts in general.

Please note that Dave has logged in and introduced himself.

Additionally, we have released log in requirements for you so that you may log in without a user name and password. This may have prevented some students from logging in before.

D. Glen,

Thank you for that introduction to yourself and your work. I am already very impressed and am in awe over your travel resume. What lead you to start working with bringing awareness to child trafficking and exploitation?

Hi David:

Where to start. Your presentation was honest, raw, powerful and simply amazing. I too, like our previous bloggers, appreciate the introduction that you provided before today's class presentation. However, I'm very happy about not having read that introduction, because your presentation blew me away that much more.

You took us on a very clear, informative and complete journey of what it is to be a documentary photographer. The examples you provided from Salgado, whose photos on industrial/mine workers is also awesome, along with your intriguing work (turban studies, etc.) really helped to display "connecting with what you care about".

Towards the end of your presentation, you touched on two points, which I've summarized, that REALLY resonated with me on a personal level. 1) Pursue what you truly care about
2) Being Remembered

I too agree that life is too short and we have to leave something behind...something that lasts.

Thank You David,
-Bahador
